loquat, (Eriobotrya japonica), also known as Japanese medlar, subtropical tree of the rose family (Rosaceae), grown for its evergreen foliage and edible fruit. The loquat is native to central eastern China. It was introduced to Japan more than 1,000 years ago, where it was developed horticulturally and is still highly valued.
